Coke breeze, a carbon backfill, is employed around impressed current anodes in underground cathodic protection applications for several purposes:

1. Decreasing the resistivity of the surrounding environment to enhance the anode’s current discharge capacity.
2. Augmenting the anode surface area, thereby increasing its current discharge capability.
3. Minimizing anode consumption by incorporating carbon into the consumed portion before affecting the anode itself.

Particle size and shape play crucial roles in backfill specification. These factors dictate the contact area between the anode and the ground, as well as the porosity of the column, essential for gas ventilation. General-purpose coke breeze suits shallow horizontal and vertical groundbeds, while closed deep well groundbeds necessitate a special calcined petroleum coke breeze.
